Church Mouse: Sept 2018

Posted by Church Mouse on

The summer months flew by like they always do, and here we are in September again! The children are getting back into their school routines, most of the college students are nestled in their dorms, and hopefully the cooler weather is on its way!

Fellowship Ministry is planning an end of summer picnic on Wednesday September 5 from 6-8 pm at CV Park. We’ll be behind the dog park area, at the picnic tables. Bring your own dinner and something to share. This will be an informal, relaxed event for the whole family.

We are celebrating the beginning of fall with Country Kick-Off Sunday, September 9 with one combined service at 9:00 am. Get your boots, hats, and bandanas on because we will have toe stomping worship music by our praise band and some special guest musicians on the fiddle, banjo, and pedal steel guitar. Right after the service, Fellowship will be serving up a biscuits and gravy brunch and all the fixin’s downstairs in Koopmans. We’re really hoping you’ll invite a friend because we’d love for new people to see all LCPC has to offer. We’ll even have a fancy invitation for you to hand out!

The evening of September 9, we hope you’ll come back at 7:00 pm for a violin recital with Canadian violinist Martin Beaver and pianist Hyejin Kim in our sanctuary. Martin is a faculty member of the Colburn Conservatory of Music and also played with the world renowned Tokyo String Quartet. The concert is free but donations will benefit LCPC and Education Through Music, Los Angeles.

PEAK is resuming on Wednesday, September 12 and John Arangio can’t wait to try out the new kitchen appliances for the PEAK dinners! Pat Chambers’ Love and Logic Class will be back, and Lee will be offering a class called “Big Questions of the Bible” and a future class on anxiety. The Bible Journaling class will be taking a break this fall. Stay tuned for possible special Bible Journaling events.

Kids Hope USA mentoring will be starting back up mid September at La Crescenta Elementary School. If you are over the age of 17 and have a special place in your heart for kids, contact Mary Wilson, , to find out how you can become a mentor. There are also opportunities to be a prayer partner or help with special parties.

Have you ever wanted to be part of an inductive bible study? Well it’s your lucky month because Terri Hewitt is leading one every Sunday in the John Estelle room at 10:45 am, through the beginning of October. She is going over John chapters 13-17 verse by verse and inspiring fascinating examination and discussion of the last day of Jesus’ life.

We have lots of unique opportunities to get involved at LCPC. Do you enjoy praying with others? We would love to add some prayer partners to our Sunday morning prayer team. Are you friendly and helpful? We need more ushers and greeters. Good with computers? We are in need of someone to program the chimes that bless our surrounding neighbors with beautiful music. And these are just a few of the ways you can serve at LCPC! Contact Nancy in the church office if you are interested in any of these important jobs.

Did you know we have a Diabetes Support group that meets on the first Thursday of every month? If you or a loved one are living with Diabetes and would like to talk with others who understand and can give you practical tips, guidance and support, then come to a meeting! The next one will be September 6 in the Koopmans couch area from 7:00-8:30 pm.

The Wildlife Tour was another spectacular adventure in God’s gorgeous Sierra Nevada creations. The hikers got a little bit of all the weather patterns California has to offer – smoke from the wildfires, thunder, rain and even some hail! But, they were prepared and loved every minute of being together for this breathtaking retreat.

It was wonderful to have Monday@JoJo’s sing last month at the 11:00 service. They are a fabulous women’s ensemble featuring our own Shawn Kelly and Sharon Valdez, and they did a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace. If you missed it, make sure to watch the video on their Facebook page.

Congratulations to Kevin Robertson on his marriage to Sandy Hall. They were wed last month and we are so happy for them!

We were sad to say goodbye to our beloved Rosa Hopkins who went to be with the Lord. She was a huge part of LCPC’s children’s ministry program for many years and touched the lives of countless kids in our community. Her memorial service was a wonderful tribute to her life with contributions by Lee Cook, Pastor Andy, Darren Pollock, Pat Chambers and Tom and Jennifer Brown.

CFC replaced all the blinds in their classrooms, so please use care when opening or closing them. CFC and the church also have a new church van, and since it’s too tall to fit in the lower parking lot, it’s new home will be in the main parking lot. Those kids are riding in style now! And speaking of CFC, save the date for their big 50th anniversary celebration on Sunday October 14. There will be worship, activities, lunch, old friends and lots of fun memories.

In preparation for her move to Long Beach, Jenny Schwing had help in packing up her house. She noticed an artwork box labeled “Family Eating.” Having no clue what was in the box, she opened it to find an African batik of The Last Supper that she had purchased at one of our Alternative Gift Fairs. I guess that’s one way of describing Jesus’ last meal! I’ll see you next month!
