Church Mouse: August 2018

Posted by Church Mouse on

August is upon us and I’m hoping it might be a smidge cooler than July was! If we wanted Palm Springs summer temperatures, we’d live there, right? I had to hide out in the church library where Duane Fernandez and Geoff Bryan just installed a new wall air conditioner, but at least I got to watch Ashley and Kristy scurry around getting ready for VBS.

We had 215 energetic kids shipwrecked here all week for our deserted island themed VBS, but they all left knowing Jesus Rescues! Along with the kids, we had 60 dedicated volunteers teaching the kids, drenching them during water games, escorting them to their centers, feeding them snacks and entertaining them with songs, stories, crafts and skits.

We had a great turnout of families for the Thursday night Luau in the courtyard.  Thank you to Noel Collins and Pastor Andy who BBQ’d loads of hamburgers and hot dogs for our guests. The hit of the night was the two waterslides, but sno-cones came in a close second, along with face painting! Once again we had many willing volunteers who were at VBS all morning, then came back and worked hard that evening! Thank you also to Baldo and Javier who had the task of cleaning up after the festivities were over!

Our VBS kids raised over $650 dollars for Operation Kid-to-Kid, which sends seed packets to families in Haiti so they can grow their own fruits and vegetables. Ashley reluctantly kissed a big stinky fish as a reward for the kids’ generosity. It was a spectacular week, and we appreciate everyone who helped make VBS a success!

The High Schoolers recently got back from their favorite week of the year at Mount Hermon! They loved seeing Austin Granier show off his drama skills in the morning skit! The Junior Highers are excited to be heading off to Campus By the Sea on Catalina Island August 5. We know they will have an equally awesome week!

The Global Leadership Conference is just days away on August 9-10 and there may still be space available. You can go to willowcreek.com/summit and click the blue “Register Now” button to check availability at the La Canada Presbyterian location. Don’t forget to use the code: PARTNERORG for the discounted rate. It is an incredible event for anyone involved in any kind of leadership.

Our GUSD kids will be heading back to school on August 22 so to end the week on a fun note, Ashley is hosting a Back to School Party Friday August 24 from 6:30-8:30pm. Kids K-6th grade are invited to come have dinner and see a movie down in Koopmans. Parents are welcome but not required.

PEAK will be starting next month on Wednesday September 5, but if you’re itching for something exciting to do on Wednesday nights in August, come hang out with the Bible Journaling group in Koopmans from 6:30-8:00 pm and they’ll teach you how to create beautiful Bible pages! There are plenty of supplies you can borrow so you don’t need to bring anything with you.

We had 72 LCPC Dodger fans gather at the ballpark last month, and what a blow out game it was! The group tickets were $17 each, so everyone ended up paying $1/run since the final score was 17-1 Dodgers! And, some of our adorable youth made it on the Jumbotron! All the Dodger fans all left with smiles on their faces!

It’s been wonderful to have some of our visiting missionaries back at LCPC these past few weeks – Darren, Elisabeth, Sammy and Calvin Kennedy all the way from Cairo, Egypt; Terri Hewitt from Taiwan; and Tom and Robyn Crabtree from Jos, Nigeria. Hope you’ve had a chance to chat with them because they always have fascinating and inspiring stories. Keep them and all of our missionaries in your prayers.

Terri Hewitt will be here for an extended visit and is in search of a car she can borrow. If you happen to have an extra one in your family, please contact Nancy in the church office and she can put you in touch with Terri.

Save the date - Sunday September 9th for the Country Kick-Off Sunday Service and brunch. Worship and Music is planning one combined service that day at 9:00 am with a country western band leading the music. The Fellowship Committee is planning a brunch in Koopmans right afterwards with musical entertainment and games for the kids! It will be great to have the whole church family together, celebrating the beginning of the fall season, a new sermon series, and the return of PEAK.

If you happen to be enjoying the Party in the Breezeway on a Sunday morning, and you see people arriving for the 11:00 service at the Anointing Ministry Church that is meeting in the Chapel, please say hi and introduce yourself! Some of their kids came to VBS and are attending our Sunday school classes and youth group. Let’s get to know these families so they feel welcome and may attend some of the other events we offer.

Enjoy this last month of summer, stay cool and I’ll see you next month!
